RESUMO

Ramshorn snails from the family Planorbidae are important freshwater snails due to their low trophic level, and some of them act as intermediate hosts for zoonotic trematodes. There are about 250 species from 40 genera of Planorbidae, but only 14 species from 5 genera (Anisus, Biomphalaria, Bulinus, Gyraulus, and Planorbella) have sequenced complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes). In this study, we sequenced and assembled a high-quality mitogenome of a ramshorn snail, Polypylis sp. TS-2018, which represented the first mitogenome of the genus. The mitogenome of Polypylis sp. TS-2018 is 13,749 bp in length, which is shorter than that of most gastropods. It contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA). We compared mitogenome characteristics, selection pressure, and gene rearrangement among all of the available mitogenomes of ramshorn snails. We found that the nonsynonymous and synonymous substitution rates (Ka/Ks) of most PCGs indicated purifying and negative selection, except for atp8 of Anisus, Biomphalaria, and Gyraulus, which indicated positive selection. We observed that transpositions and reverse transpositions occurred on 10 tRNAs and rrnS, which resulted in six gene arrangement types. We reconstructed the phylogenetic trees using the sequences of PCGs and rRNAs and strongly supported the monophyly of each genus, as well as three tribes in Planorbidae. Both the gene rearrangement and phylogenetic results suggested that Polypylis had a close relationship with Anisus and Gyraulus, while Bulinus was the sister group to all of the other genera. Our results provide useful data for further investigation of species identification, population genetics, and phylogenetics among ramshorn snails.

We consider an aspiration-based asymmetric individual activity co-evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game model on the square lattice. In detail, each player has an individual weight that evolves with its strategy. We introduce an asymmetric setting that only µ fractions of players in the network chosen to be active can update their individual weights according to whether their payoffs satisfy their aspirations. Therefore, our individual weights can be regarded as a type of intrinsic motivation satisfaction. Through Monte Carlo simulations on the square lattice, our co-evolution mechanism has been proven to significantly promote cooperation. Furthermore, we find that the moderate µ leads to the highest cooperation level. By dividing the players into four types according to their strategies and weights, we prove that the inversion of the dominant relationship between cooperators and defectors with low weights leads to a conversion cycle of the four types of players, which enhances spatial reciprocity to promote cooperation. Moderate µ results in an appropriate number of low-weight players in this cycle. Interestingly, our results show that higher weight heterogeneity does not lead to higher levels of cooperation, which is contrary to the intuition formed in the previous work.

Apple snails from the family Ampullariidae have become economically important due to several species mainly from the genus Pomacea being invasive. The heat shock proteins (HSPs), which are important molecular chaperones for species responding to various stresses, have been proved to play critical roles in adapting harsh environments in the invasive apple snails. The recent release of the genomes of Pomacea canaliculata, Pomacea maculata, Lanistes nyassanus, and Marisa cornuarietis has opened the opportunity for a comprehensive analysis of HSP superfamily in the ampullariids. We identified the number of HSP from P. canaliculata (PcaHSPs) was greater than that from the other three species. A total of 42 PcaHSPs were distributed on 12 chromosomes and were classified into the families of HSP90, HSP70, HSP60, HSP40, HSP20, and HSP10. Each family formed a monophyletic clade on the phylogenetic tree with strong support values, except for the HSP90 and HSP70 families. The RNA-seq data shows that most the PcaHSPs were of tissue-specific expression levels. Moreover, we identified more HSP genes with stronger transcription levels in response to heat than cold stress. Our findings are informative for future studies on stress adaptation and developing effective management strategies focusing on HSPs in invasive apple snails.

Bioretention is commonly used for runoff pollution control. The first flush strength of pollutants can affect bioretention performance. To examine the influence of the first flush strength on bioretention performance, bioretention columns filled with garden soil as the main media were established. Activated carbon and water treatment residuals (WTR) were added and compared for their ability to enhance phosphorus removal. Waste edible fungus culture medium (WEFCM) as a carbon source was also explored. When WEFCM was used as a carbon source instead of wood chips, total nitrogen (TN) removal increased from 60.83 ± 21.22 to 62.21 ± 16.43%, but chemical oxygen demand (COD) leaching was observed. WTR was better able than activated carbon to enhance phosphorus removal (87.97 ± 8.87 vs. 81.66 ± 9.27%) without impacting TN removal. NH4+-N removal increased with increasing first flush strength, but there was no trend for suspended solids (SS), COD, TN, or total phosphorus. First leaching phenomenon in bioretention outflow was proposed in this study. A low first leaching was observed in the outflow when the inflow had a uniform pollutant mass (i.e., no first flush) because of media leaching. A weak first leaching outflow was observed for SS and COD when they were present at strong first flush inflow.

Objectives: From the perspective of media framing, this paper explores how factual frame and influence frame affect the cognition of vaccine effectiveness among Chinese netizens, and how emotions vary in the process and act on the cognition. Methods: We first discuss the theoretical framework and propose hypotheses. Drawing on the cognitive theory of emotions and the Pleasure- Arousal-Dominance (PAD) model, the scale and questionnaire were designed, and used to test the influence of media framing over the cognition of vaccine effectiveness by 2-factor ANOVA and Bootstrap methods. Results: The proposed hypotheses were verified. The perceived effectiveness of domestic vaccines corresponding to the factual frame group was on average 0.19 (95% CI 0.641-0.642) higher than that of the influence frame. The impact on audience cognition from reports of positive tendency was on average 0.642 (95% CI 0.641-0.642) higher than that of negative tendency. The indirect effect of the media frame on the perceived effectiveness through the mediating variable emotion was -0.0923, at the 95% level. Conclusions: The audience can understand the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines better if the factual frame with actual data and authoritative opinions is adopted, rather than reports of the effects of the vaccines on the virus, the vaccinated, and society. Moreover, media reports should be more positive to mitigate the negative emotions, stimulate the arousal of public opinions, and improve audience cognition of report contents, thereby encouraging vaccine uptake.
